Weekly Bible Meditation 5-27-2013

Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. James 3:5-6; 9-10

Words... The Bible clearly says that we need to be careful of what comes out of our mouth. We can not make excuses for things that we say and expect God to nonchalantly take it. He does hear everything we say. We can build each other up with words but in today's world where we are all about ourselves we more often tear people down. Whether it's through sarcasm, or if you're one of those people who are always saying EVERYTHING that you think, if we withhold truth from someone, or if we flat out lie to their face, or talk behind someone's back or gossiping. The words we say ultimately come from what is in our mind. I have always been someone who does not use cuss words. It amazes me how many people use them every day like they are necessary in their sentences. They really don't get your point across better. The fact that I do not say them and am not around them makes my ears very sensitive to them. Every time i hear one it makes an impact on my brain. The more I hear the more likely I will end up using them when I least expect it. "Oh be careful little ears what you hear." I recently heard something on the radio that stuck with me.. I don't remember it exactly but it was something like ... When our minds are purified our words will reflect that....  So this week we need to pray earnestly for a cleansing of our minds so that we can speak God's will without conflict. Think of all the arguments will will avoid, all the feelings we will not hurt, all the building up of others we will be able to do! Words are powerful. Use them for good and not for our selfish evil ways! I am going to challenge myself this week to use my ears (Proverbs 1:5 - A wise [man] will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:) MORE than my words! It will help me learn where I need to rid my mind of filth.
